Renewable Energy Event was a success

Mar 15th, 2010 by kc | 0

PEAT held a very successful event to help with more than 30 people.  The evening was held to inform the community about the government’s new schemes to subsidise renewable energy through the Feed in Tariff and the Renewable Heat Incentive.

The slides can be seen here.

If you have any questions about the event, please contact Derek Moss derek@ecofirstconsult.co.uk.

Many thanks to al the speakers- especially Derek and also thank you to everyone for coming along and enjoying the cakes!

Unlocking Community Energy-proposal for research

Mar 15th, 2010 by Collette | 0
We have recenly been contacted by Rob Hopkins..see letter below. Linda Screen helped me to form an appropriate reply. On behalf of PEAT  I have given a summary of the community projects that PEAT has supported or initiated…its amazing what has been achieved !  Everyone has played an important part in all of this.

Linda.. Transition Dorchester/part time PA for Rob in Totnes.. has now replied…

Dear Transitioners
The Transition Network is  currently applying to the European Social Research Council (ESRC) for a research grant to explore the impacts of the Transition Movement in unlocking energy-dependent behaviours, and how learning from this research might help communities, be included in future training and learning and be shared more widely across the world.

The research is part of an “Energy and Communities” call - further details can be found here:
/opportunities/current_funding_opportunities
/Energy_and_Communities_Collaborative_Venture.aspx
We are working with Plymouth University, University of Gloucestershire and Schumacher College and are seeking involvement from Transition Initiatives to be part of this. We are interested in hearing whether you would like to participate and if yes, if you can send us a letter of support for this project (our deadline for this is Tuesday so sorry for the short notice)

The intention is that the project helps participating Transition Communities with a handful of activities to initiate or try-out interventions including some activities maybe co-designed with the Transition Network where you have particular problems /issues you want to tackle. We do not want to be too specific about what this might be like in practice. The research team also want to work with you to measure (in a sensible way), the impact that groups are making towards implementing low energy behaviours on the ground. This should help Initiatives evidence their local impacts, and also help future funding requests that you might want to make. Rob Hopkins will be employed as part of the research team, to spend at least some time personally working with/ helping the groups involved to design and implement interventions.

If you are interested, and able to provide a letter of support for this bid, we feel this would greatly assist our chances of being selected and will help grow capacity to do more work in the future. If you are able to help, then please address and send your letter of support (in electronic form, ideally including your logo) to Professor David Wheeler, Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Plymouth (david.wheeler@plymouth) and copy to Linda Screen (lindascreen@transitionnetwork.org). We will try and get enough funding to work with 8 areas over 3 years.

We are on an impossibly short deadline, so you could aim to get the letter to us by Monday 8th  next week (our submission deadline is the 10th) then that would be brilliant. If you need any further information, then please do get in touch with Linda, and thank you, in advance for your help!

Kind regards

Rob Hopkins
Hi Collette I have put PEAT forward  as a possible Research “subject” cos it might mean you get Rob down for a few sessions and I know you’re a bit of a fan - hope this was ok?’

Wool Workshop- Corfe

Mar 9th, 2010 by kc | 0

Wool Workshop
WHEN - Every Wednesday (including school holidays)
WHERE - Corfe Castle Village Hall, Corfe Castle, Dorset
TIME - 9.45am - 12.30
WHAT - we are a group of 50 yarn crafters and have been running for 9 years now. We meet each week and are a very informal bunch. We meet to do what women have been doing for generations - create, chat, drink tea and put the world to rights! Although I do have to point out that we have a much cherished gentleman who knits with us and we would welcome more chaps! We have spinners, weavers, dyers, tapestry makers, and of course, plenty who knit and crochet! We run ‘workshops’ a couple of times each month where one of us passes on their craft to those who want to learn - these can vary from Dorset Button making, to felting, wire and bead knitting, anything you can think of really! If you have any interest in yarn crafts, or would like to learn, then do stop by, have a slice of cake and come and meet us.

Dorset Transition Skills Audit

Feb 23rd, 2010 by kc | 0

When a number of Dorset transition initiatives met up with da21 at the 2009 Tolpuddle Martyrs Festival, they asked da21 to help with a “skills audit” to find out what skills exist within each group.  The idea is that the various Dorset transition groups are likely to have different sets of skills among their members, and may be able to help each other develop their activities by sharing or swapping some of these skills.   As part of the preparation for the Dorset Transition Gathering on 13 March (details on the da21 website), we have now set up the Dorset Transition Skills survey on the Survey Monkey website.    The results from the survey will be presented at the Gathering, when ideas on how to share skills can also be discussed and taken forward.  But first it really is vital that everyone in the Dorset transition movement fills in the survey!  We need you all to fill it in whether or not you can come to the Gathering.  It really is very easy and quick – no more than 10 minutes, honest!  Just go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/dorsetransitionsurvey

Best wishes,Susan

One month to reconnect the Swanage railway

Feb 22nd, 2010 by kc | 0

Plans to resume regular passenger train services from Wareham to Swanage need £3m by the end of the month, or the project could be delayed indefinitely.

The funds are needed to pay for essential track and signalling work, which would enable services to run.

The investment needed represents a significant step in the long running aim to restore the service, which was withdrawn in 1972.

Dorset County Council is seeking funding from central government.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/dorset/hi/people_and_places/newsid_8513000/8513078.stm

Network Rail’s Poole to Wool resignalling scheme presents a unique and un-missable opportunity to reconnect the signaling for the former Wareham to Swanage branch line at an affordable cost. The Poole to Wool scheme will be delivered by the end of 2012, and if the resignaling to the branch line is carried out at this time, if will cost in the region of £2.5 - £3.0 million and be delivered by the end of 2012. If this opportunity is missed, the cost would be significantly greater and the branch reconnection is likely to be delayed, for around 50 years. The cost of branch line signalling as a standalone job would be astronomical.

Therefore we need to write to Jim Knight MP to encourage him to put pressure on central government to find the funding.

Write to Jim at his constituency office:

Write to Jim at the House of Commons:

Send Jim an email:

This transport link is absolutely vital towards connecting Purbeck and getting people out of their cars and off the already congested roads.
